Selected Field Recordings From India/Nepal

Volume I, “Folk Songs,” emphasizes the personal, intimate music of individual people.

Volume II, “Religious Music,” is music of the collective. Recorded in a public sphere where I was only one among many, they are typically devotional or ritualistic in nature, and often designed to bring performers and participants together. The tone wavers between the celebratory and the solemn.

Volume III, “Environments,” focuses on the natural soundscape, largely outside the machinations of mankind, but meant to express how the sounds of a landscape informs the resident culture. One recording of note happened just one day after the 7.8 earthquake that struck Kathmandu, Nepal in April of 2015.
